Canggu - A Perfect Introduction to Bali

4th to 9th January 2017

As we flew into Bali, boomeranging around the coastline and back to Denpasar Airport, we were welcomed by dusky oranges, pinks, and purples of the sunset. My first thought was "ah yes, this island is a pro; it hooks you from the start".

I was 100% right. Bali is gorgeous. There is no getting away from that fact. It's beautiful almost everywhere you go here.

We began our Bali adventure at Canggu, a laid-back surfer's haven on the south coast of the island. Staying at Serenity Eco Guesthouse gave us access to lots of yoga classes (yay!), the beach on our doorstep, and the bars and cafes of Canggu within easy walking distance.

Canggu has art all over the place. Green fields are framed by buildings with vibrant graffiti art on the side. Boat huts along the beach are decorated with gorgeous paintings. Each cafe and bar sign is a mini masterpiece.

We jumped right in, wandering along the crazy Canggu shortcut. This is a raised road, with no border that cuts through the rice paddies. It's just wide enough for 1 car at a time. However, it seems all cars, bicycles, scooters, and pedestrians take this route. It's an adventure every time you venture through. On one occasion, we joined an impromptu rescue team to pull a car back onto the road after it had toppled into the neighbouring rice paddy!

It was fantastic to have some solid yoga time while in Canggu, with a dose of aerial yoga thrown in just to see if I had retained any upper body strength (errrr some...).

Canggu is definitely on the list for a second visit. There is seriously great surfing here, and despite our very best efforts, we didn't even scratch the surface of the bars and restaurants here.

Canggu Snapshots

  • Exploring Indonesian food at Dandelion, with the help of our lovely waitress, Alda.
  • Grinning ear to ear on a Sunday morning walk along Canggu beach, toes in the sea and sun on my face.
  • The battle to get our luggage back after Malaysia Air left the bags somewhere in Kuala Lumpur (it had to happen at least once right?).
  • Frog chorus nightly in the field beside our guesthouse.
  • Nick's perfect eggs benedict at the fabulous Milk and Madu.
  • Hanging upside down in a room packed with about 30 other people in hammocks - very up close and personal with lots of giggling!
  • Having dinner in a restaurant housed within a converted temple.
  • A bull charging towards us on the road turning out to be a panicked bull being chased by a dog.
  • Doing our best to pick out food from a buffet selection at Bu Mi Warung, one of the best local spots to eat.
